Carol Benson, Professor of Education at Columbia University and Director of Multilingual Education International, explains how her team used hundreds of testimonies from our participants in Uganda, Togo and Congo to investigate how the ALEF method contributes to empowerment.

BCPAD har sedan fem år tillbaka drivit studiecirklar med ALEF-metoden i provinsen Kongo Central i sydvästra Kongo-Kinshasa. Från och med i år ska programmet utvidgas så att drygt 1000 människor årligen i 40 olika byar runt om i provinsen kan få chansen att påbörja en läs- och skrivkurs! I februari besökte vi BCPAD:s vackra lokaler i Kimpese för att håll en veckas utbildning för 20 nyblivna ALEF-coacher. Det är de som kommer att träna gruppledare, stötta och följa upp deras arbete i fält. Coaches from our Ugandan partner Change African Child International talk about what motivates them and the importance of literacy in their community.

På maninka-språket betyder ordet WAKALI mod, uthållighet, envishet. Vill man uppmuntra någon kan man säga "i wakali!" - ge inte upp! Förra året lanserade vår guineanska partner @eadg EADG ett nytt program: folkbildning enligt ALEF-metoden för vuxna som aldrig fått chansen att gå i skolan. De valde att döpa initiativet till "Projekt Wakali". Mycket passande, tycker vi. Nu är de första studiegrupperna nästan klara med nivå 1, och det pågår ett seminarium i Kankan för utveckling av lektionsplaner och läromedel till nivå 2. ALEF:s utbildningssamordnare Adam Bott intervjuade Filamy Dioubate, en av seminariedeltagarna, för att få hennes perspektiv på projektets betydelse.

"Han kunde inte ens skriva sitt eget namn, nu är han gruppens sekreterare!" Doumbouya, studiegruppledare i Guinea, berättar stolt om en av sina deltagares stora framsteg.

ALEF's mission is to help adults living in poverty transform their lives with the help of literacy education. Since our foundation in 2010 tens of thousands of people in seven different language communities have taken part in ALEF programmes. How much do we really know about the outcomes? The "Informal Literacy Discussions" are an ongoing seminar series hosted by BALID, the British Association of Literacy and Development, since 2011. The discussions bring together practitioners and academics to share experiences and investigate range of current ‘hot topics’ in literacy. In November 2023 ALEF's Education Coordinator Adam Bott led a discussion on the topic of impact in non-formal adult education: Can you measure empowerment?How can we take account of participants' own diverse experiences and priorities? Adam is joined in the discussion by Faroq Hamo, from the organisation Imprint of Hope, who recounts his experiences leading the pilot project for ALEF literacy empowerment groups for Yezidi refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan.
